PENANG: Christmas decorations and carols welcomed parishioners and their guests at the Church of the Immaculate Conception during the parish’s Christmas tree lighting ceremony recently.

The inaugural affair, which was themed Give and Rejoice, was held in the courtyard of the church’s Parish Centre and attended by over 1,000 people.

Standing resplendent in the middle of the courtyard was a five-metre tall Christmas tree covered in lights. Gift wrapped presents were distributed to the young ones and the elderly.

The lighting of the tree was greeted with much cheer and applause, as the church’s various choirs led those present in singing.

Parish priest Fr Jude Miranda was joined by Bishop of Penang Sebastian Francis, Bishop Emeritus Anthony Selvanayagam and former parish priest Fr Michael Cheah.

In his welcoming address, Fr Jude described Christmas as a joyous celebration to welcome the birth of Christ and unite fellow Christians and other Malaysians.

“It is a great honour and pleasure for us to celebrate the spirit of Christmas in the company of our fellow parishioners, neighbours and friends.

“The spirit of Christmas can only be felt if we open our hearts to care for one another by giving and rejoicing in Jesus’ birth,” he added.

Apart from joining in singing Christmas  carols, participating in games and making memories at a photo booth, those present were also able to indulge in cookie exchanges, and shop in a Christmas-themed bazaar. -- IC Parish Communication Team
