The Catholic Student Society (CSS) of the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) is in its 7th year.

An annual event is a Mass to start the academic year.

This year, the Mass was celebrated by Fr Surain Raj on Oct 19 at the UNMC Campus. Other activities that kicked off the academic year included the Clubs and Society’s Fair which is a recruitment drive for members. This fair is a university-wide event and other clubs and societies at the University host individual booths to promote their clubs and societies. This year’s Mass included the commissioning of the 2017/18 academic year committee members and advisor, and special blessings for the students and staff.

In his homily, Fr Surain talked about the beatitudes. He asked the students to think about being servant leaders in their CSS and urged them to become leaders who lead by example, upon graduation. He said, “The world does not need clowns and manipulators; it needs leaders who lead by example.” He went on to explain that people who are blessed or happy are the people who follow the beatitudes, as these are the values of the Kingdom.

He explained that the number of members is not important, as Jesus calls disciples and not crowds. He narrated a story to illustrate this point. “There was once an event which was meant for 2,000 people. There was huge publicity ahead of this event but, on that day, it rained heavily,” he said. People slowly trickled in and, by the first half hour, there were only 20 to 30 people in the room. The guest speaker, a priest, was rather disheartened when one of the participants came up to him and said, “Father, can we start the session please, we have waited for a while now.” The priest was hesitant and then, a participant confidently said, “Jesus called disciples and not a crowd, so let’s start while you have disciples.” Fr Surain related this story to encourage the CSS team on the number of members, as well as the turnout at their events.

Also present was CSS advisor Professor Dominic Foo from the Faculty of Engineering.

According to President Vinsensius Felix Putra Andy, “Our aim is to be a platform for all Catholic students to gather together in the spirit of Jesus Christ, as the centre, and to educate the Catholic community on campus on the Catholic faith as some of us struggle with this. Therefore, the society organises events and talks. The talks are aimed at deepening our understanding on Church doctrines as well as in strengthening our faith.

“Game nights will expand our knowledge about our faith in creative and fun ways. Prayer nights are for us to return to the roots of our faith amidst the hectic university pace. Alongside these events, we hold two major events per academic year, one in each semester. In the autumn semester, we perform a Christmas play at the Church of the Holy Family in Kajang. In the spring semester, we conduct the Easter-mazing Race, where we invite CSS from other universities to come and race around our campus. They will have to do challenges to reach the finish line in the spirit of Easter. All in all, we are happy to serve as the Executive Committee of CSS UNMC and hope to serve Jesus by producing the best events that we can,” said Felix who is a final year student from the BSc (Hons) Pharmaceutical and Health Sciences Faculty at the University.
