Walk in newness of life, Romans 6: 4 was the theme for the Nativity of Blessed Virgin Mary Church (NBVM) 50 Single Adults BBQ with the Parish priest, Rev Fr Dominic Santhiyagu on April 22, 2018 at 7.30 pm. The aim of the gathering was to kick-start the Single Young Adults Group aged 20 and above in three stages; to know Jesus, to be his witness and to proclaim the good news. The young adults were members of the PDSYA (Penang Diocese Single Young Adults), UITM students from Sabah and Sarawak, working Filipinos and Indonesians and local youths. The gathering began with praise and worship, a short homily by Fr Dominic and fellowship.

The field of NBVM was alive with a barbeque station filled with marinated chicken. The praise and worship set the tone for a more purposeful invitation for the gathering. Fr Dominic began his session by asking “How many of us pay toll when travelling?” He said most of us do it to reach our destination fast and easily. Similarly, if we want to walk in newness of life, one has to pay toll too; through our lives and actions. TOLL in short refers to Transform, Obedience, Love and Listen.

Fr Dominic quoted 1 Jn 4:8 Anyone who does not love, does not know God, for God is Love and urged them to love themselves first, for without loving ourselves we cannot love one another. In Luke 9: 35, the voice commanded us to “Listen” to Jesus. He urged the youth to spend some time in prayer, to have a special corner in their homes where they meet Jesus or spend time at the Blessed Sacrament. It is in prayer that Jesus was transfigured. We need to look deep into our hearts if we want to be transformed. When we love and listen, God will give us the necessary grace to be obedient.

In Jn 14:21 ‘Whoever holds to my commandments and keeps them is the one who loves me; and whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I shall love him and reveal myself to him.’ Fr Dominic reiterated that, to be transformed, one has to connect with Jesus. It is in prayer that one has to seek Jesus. It is not enough to attend seminars, there has to be a personal effort to experience Jesus. Only through prayer are we transformed.

This gathering was the stepping stone for a three stage mission that would entail a journey of one and a half years. The first stage is to be Friends of Jesus that is, to know him. The second stage, a Disciple of Jesus which is to learn about Jesus with a mission and, finally, an Apostle of Jesus, that is to preach his good news. He invited the young adults to volunteer and organise the subsequent stages.

The fellowship allowed the youth to get to know one another and foster a harmonious relationship. During the fellowship, Fr Dominic reached out to each of the young adults by serving them his colourful and crunchy homemade tossed salad. The young adults enjoyed themselves and looked forward to more of such purpose-filled fellowships.
