Dear Editor,
I applaud the HERALD’s front page about ‘Chinese Catholic Church demolished.’

I am sorry that an early reader, Peter Wang, disagrees. It is when good people stay silent that evil perpetuates.

China will soon be the largest economy in the world and, with it comes great power and, hopefully, responsibility.

Attacking places of worship, forbidding the religious instruction of young people and the jailing of religious leaders, all must be condemned.

Free people around the world are not totally free until all of us are free.

As a responsible citizen, and as a Christian, we must peacefully speak out against any injustice.

The worst thing we can do is ignore it and put it on the back pages. Even worse is to say things like we cannot judge such an odious regime with the same yardstick as ours because they are not democratic.

This is ludicrous. Keeping quiet does not help our Catholic brothers / sisters in China. It does not make the world a better place.
