Datuk Saifuddin shared his experiences of how Malaysians, when faced with challenges and tribulation, will come together as 1Malaysia, the real 1Malaysia.

“I remember attending some of these prayers and vigils, either interfaith or multi-faith prayer vigils that were organised for MH370 and MH17. I remember this programme at the Masjid Sultan Mizan in Putrajaya, where we had others from different faiths coming together. After our Maghrib prayers, the others prayed too. It is doable.

“My hometown, Temerloh was also hit by the floods. What I saw were the civil society and volunteers working. “We are all very thankful for their time and assistance. There was this Buddhist group who I saw cleaning a surau in Termerloh. This is the kind of spirit that we must celebrate.”

Speaking on how the people of other faith are persecuted, he advised, “As a Muslim, I also understand that my Christian brothers and brothers of other faiths have faced all kinds of tribulations. But should you be faced with these kind of not-so-1Malaysia treatment, please remind your Muslim brothers that Islam is a religion of peace. Tell them that, in case they forget.

“Our religion is of mercy to all, just like any other religion. That we should celebrate the plural society. Allah could have made us one. But he did not. He purposely made us, men and women of different races and tribes so that we may know each other, not despise each other.

“In fact, it is part of the mercy of Allah that you deal with them gently. Even in cases of dispute, let not the hatred of others to you make you swerve from your actions. Be just.

“Malaysia is blessed. It has been peaceful in the sense that we have been spared war and extreme violence. But we can do more.

“Let me end by saying that we are all Malaysians. We all love God and God teaches us to love our fellow beings as we love ourselves.”
