We need to preserve our faith

Dear Editor,
One afternoon, while at lunch, my grand-daughter who is in the upper primary at the local convent, quite casually confessed that a group of classmates had broached the subject of conversion to her.

Predictably I almost choked on my food. I waited for everyone to finish their lunch after which I quietly summoned her aside and questioned her further on what had actually transpired.

She explained that four of her classmates had advocated embracing the Muslim faith. One opined that she stood to gain so much in terms of material profit. Another hinted at the preferential treatment that is the right of every Muslim and all four had gleefully declared that Islam was the best.

While my initial reaction was of disbelief and anger, I rationalized that it would be futile to pursue the matter at school. Suffice it to say that apart from running the gauntlet at school, my granddaughter may even be obliged to make several unnecessary and disconcerting adjustments to her nascent life.

Considering the whole episode in a different light, I am truly amazed, nay impressed with the measure of conviction and sense of evangelization of the four young Muslim girls. It must have taken some degree of courage and religiosity to do what they spontaneously did.

So in the light of all the blatant and subtle challenges, I am convinced that precious little can be achieved by confrontation and belligerence.

On my part, I am positively persuaded to reinforce my convictions regarding religious instruction at home and at Sunday school. More importantly I have to validate my own belief system through my Christian witnessing. What a huge challenge that’s going to be!

It is times like these that one can fully appreciate the zeal, tenacity and dedication of catechism teachers.

God bless our Faith and all those who teach and live it!!
