The youth of the Church of St Anthony organised an Easter activity on May 16, with the theme “Bread and Fish”, at the Archdiocesan Pastoral Centre (APC). They were joined by Fr Eugene Benedict, assistant parish priest.

The gathering was to evoke the spirituality of the youth by bringing them together again and to strengthen family ties.

The theme “Bread and Fish” was inspired by Fr Eugene based on the Gospel where Jesus fed 5,000 people with fish and bread. In Matthew 14:17-20, they said to him, “We have only five loaves here and two fish.” And he said, “Bring them here to me.” Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing.

Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over.” Fr Eugene has taken this approach to know them better.

Fr Eugene and Nelton Joseph, the youth leader from the Bahasa Apostolate, were in charge of the activity. Apart from that, the youth prepared the food together in a symbolic way by serving grilled fish and bread as their meal. As they shared the meal, Fr Eugene also spoke on the spiritual filling — on how Jesus gathered with His disciples and served the community. Similarly, Fr Eugene’s message to the youth is to continue to live in the community and be a little shepherd to others, so that the faith will be strengthened. With this spiritual filling, they can bring home something more meaningful.

Finally, this activity also taught them about the life of Jesus Christ, serving others like their own family and loving one another. Hopefully, activities like this will bring more young people together as one big family of Christ.
