KUCHING: The 2024 Kuching City Christmas Parade, held on the evening of December 7, brought together 7,035 participants from various Christian denominations and backgrounds to celebrate the season of peace and goodwill. Themed Peace Be With You, the event resonated with heartfelt hymns, uplifting prayers, and vibrant festivities at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Jubilee Ground.

The evening began at 6.30pm with participants gathering in festive costumes, followed by the recitation of the Apostles’ Creed, setting a reflective tone. The parade kicked off with a stirring rendition of For Unto Us a Child Is Born and O Come, All Ye Faithful, performed by a praise and worship team from the Roman Catholic Church. Captain Carmen of The Salvation Army offered a prayer, emphasising the deeper spiritual meaning of Christmas, while Scripture readings in English, Iban, Malay, and Chinese highlighted the diversity of Kuching’s Christian community.

At 7.00pm, the much-anticipated parade began, featuring 11 beautifully crafted Christmas floats depicting scenes such as the Nativity, Angels, Shepherds and Sheep, Wise Men, and church displays. These colourful floats, accompanied by festive costumes, radiated Christmas cheer as they travelled through the streets. Throughout the route, Singspiration sessions led by Julian Gabriel encouraged the crowd to sing Christmas carols. At the same time, six marching bands from the Boys’ and Girls’ Brigades added to the lively atmosphere.

A highlight of the evening was the distribution of gifts at 8.15pm, symbolising the love and generosity at the heart of Christmas. The parade concluded around 9.00pm, leaving participants and spectators filled with joy and unity.

Organised by the Association of Churches Sarawak (ACS) and the Sarawak Evangelical Christian Association (SECA), and hosted by the Methodist Church SCAC, the event showcased the harmonious collaboration of churches such as the Catholic, Anglican, Methodist, Baptist, Salvation Army, and Seventh-Day Adventist Churches, among others.

The parade perfectly captured the festive spirit, with vibrant decorations, joyful carols, and the unity of Kuching’s multicultural community. The floats, featuring scenes like angels, wisemen, and shepherds, were a visual testament to the theme of peace, while the harmonious sounds of drums, trumpets, and flutes filled the air. The parade demonstrated the deep sense of community, joy, and togetherness that defines Kuching, offering a powerful reminder of the true meaning of Christmas. It was an unforgettable night that celebrated unity and the enduring spirit of the holiday season.
