KUALA LUMPUR:
Twenty sports legends gathered to support a noble cause recently.

They were joined by 360 attendees for the Magnificat Dinner & Dance, themed Sports Legends in Motion. The event aimed to raise funds for the community centre of the Cathedral of St John the Evangelist.

Irene Ramachandran, a member of the organising committee, expressed her delight at seeing such a diverse mix of attendees coming together for a meaningful cause.

Among the sports legends were football icon Datuk Santokh Singh, former track star and two-time Sportswoman of the Year Datuk Marina Chin and her husband, and ex-national rugby player Jagjit Singh. The event also featured Double Olympian sprinter Major-General (Retired) Datuk Sharudin Ali, Asia’s fastest sprinter, Tan Sri M. Jegathesan, and Olympian Lt Cmdr (Retired) Datuk K. Selvaratnam.

Distinguished attendees included former High Court judge, Tan Sri V.C. George, and former Royal Malaysian Navy chief, Admiral (Retired) Tan Sri K. Thanabalasingam.

Tunku Imran Tuanku Ja’afar, former president of the Olympic Council of Malaysia, captivated the audience with his renditions of The Young Ones and a medley of classics such as Cotton Fields, You Are My Sunshine, and When The Saints Go Marching In, displaying the charisma he once had as a national squash champion.

Stand-up comedian Rizal Van Geyzel broke the ice with his rib-tickling antics before former beauty queen Datuk Yasmin Yusuff, invited everyone to the dance floor.

Parish priest, Fr Gerard Theraviam, showcased his “greet, walk and dance” routine to the infectious tunes of the evergreen band Small Stones and DJ Ghandi, while Deacon Jonathan Rao relished the nostalgic 70s hits. “The music was just right and inspired me to join the fun, dancing to the beats infused with Malay, Indian, and East Malaysian elements. It was simply cool and enjoyable,” he shared.

Earlier in the evening, Fr Gerard expressed gratitude to all for their contributions of time, effort, and funds. He noted the cathedral’s honour in celebrating the sports legends and appreciated their ongoing support for worthwhile causes.
The organising team rejoiced over the event’s success, having collectively raised RM193,880.92. --Bob Ho
