Archbishop Emeritus Murphy Pakiam celebrated his 58th Sacerdotal Anniversary on May 15, 2022, with a thanksgiving Mass at the Chapel of Our Lady of Good Health, Kampung Pandan, where he presently resides as a clergy-in-residence.

The 83-year-old presided at the Sunday evening Mass with Msgr Stanislaus Soosaimariam, parish priest of Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and Fr Edwin Peter, parish priest of the Church of the Risen Christ, as cocelebrants. Also present were the archbishop’s younger brother, Dr Joseph Aloysius and family, from Penang.

Born in Tapah, Perak, the prelate was ordained as a diocesan priest on May 10, 1964. He served in several parishes in the Diocese of Penang and as the Rector of College General for two terms. Pope John Paul II appointed him as the Auxiliary Bishop of Kuala Lumpur on April 1, 1995.

On May 24, 2003, he was appointed as the third metropolitan Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur where he served for 10.5 years. In Dec 2013, upon his 75th birthday, Archbishop Emeritus Murphy resigned from his demanding position. He is presently the longest-serving priest in the archdiocese.

Fr Edwin, who preached the homily, touched on several topics. He thanked God for the gathering to celebrate Archbishop Emeritus Murphy’s sacerdotal anniversary. As May 16 was Teachers’ Day, he presented a video on gratitude and shared how students should be grateful for their teachers.

With May 15 being International Family Day, Fr Edwin spoke on the importance of love. In the day’s Gospel reading, Jesus said, “I give you a new commandment: Love one another, just as I have loved you.”

“The greatest love is from the family. Love is not about receiving, but giving. Enrich your marriage as the family is the school of love”, Fr Edwin said. “Today we also thank God for the gift of love from not just parents, but from the priesthood and Archbishop Emeritus Murphy. Priests’ hands are anointed to administer sacraments, to bless and to heal.” Archbishop Emeritus Murphy thanked God and said it was a privilege to celebrate his 58th anniversary as a priest with all present and to serve the faithful over the years.

“Thank you all for supporting me with your prayers. It’s an honour to be here, and a great privilege to be a bishop and archbishop, celebrating my priesthood.”

The prelate also expressed his appreciation to Archbishop Julian Leow for recognising and allowing him to continue working in the archdiocese.

A short video to honour his anniversary was presented before Archbishop Emeritus Murphy cut his anniversary cake. Msgr Stanislaus thanked everyone for joining in the celebration.
