SIBU: In a call to action amid the ongoing challenges of climate change and global warming, Pope Francis has urged all humanity to become “Agents of Change” and “Ambassadors of Hope”. His message of optimism and resolve resonated at the diocesan launch of the fifth year of PROTEC 5, a pivotal initiative aimed at environmental stewardship.

During the Mass on Sept 7, Bishop Joseph Hii echoed Pope Francis’ call for hope and action. Addressing an audience of over 300 participants, including students from Catholic High, SK Sacred Heart, and SK Hua Hin, Bishop Joseph declared, “Do not despair. There is Hope in Christ Jesus. Be the Agent of Change, Ambassador of Hope.”

The Mass, held at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, was concelebrated with Rector Fr Philip Hu, assistant priest Franciscan Capuchin Friar Raphael Samosir, and Neocatechumenal Way priest Fr Edward Raymond. Bishop Joseph commended the students for their efforts, noting that even small actions, such as pouring enzymes onto drains, contribute to their role as Ambassadors of Christ, spreading hope and positive change to those around them.

Representatives from 12 parishes within the Diocese of Sibu were present to receive the PROTEC 5 banner, symbolising their commitment to bringing the environmental message back to their communities.

The educational and nurturing session, which lasted two and a half hours, was followed by the celebration of the Eucharist, reinforcing the spiritual dimension of the environmental commitment.

Bishop Joseph’s message, combined with the ongoing efforts of PROTEC 5, underscores the church’s dedication to fostering a culture of environmental consciousness and hope. As the Season of Creation continues, the Diocese of Sibu remains steadfast in its mission to inspire and enact positive change for the planet.
