Be the light of Christ to others

There’s no mistaking that St John the Baptist knew what his mission was all about. It was clear that he was to herald the coming of the ‘true light of Christ’ for pagan men and women who for so long were living in spiritual darkness. Likewise, we too are called and sent by God to give witness to the ‘light’ in our own way.

In this context, we too must realize that God has tasked us with a purpose in our lives. Knowing this, we can move forward with confidence, fully trusting the ‘true light’ who called us. As St John represents the ‘light’ or ‘lamp’, let us also be ‘small lights’ for Jesus’ community and show our fellow brothers and sisters the way in true faith through Gospel valued examples of ourselves.

Living a life of virtue is not that difficult, if we surrender to Christ and nourish our growing faith in prayer and the sacramental life. We must never tire, trying even when we fall again and again. The spirit and zeal of St John the Baptist should be our example in today’s community and society.

These words were the essence of Fr Edward Rayappan’s homily at a late evening thanksgiving Eucharistic Celebration to commemorate the Nativity of St John Baptist at the Portuguese Settlement Chapel of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception on June 23.

Concelebrating with Frs Michael Mannayagam and Damian Pereira were some forty priests from the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur, Dioceses of Penang and Melaka-Johor, Sabah, Sarawak, Singapore and Brunei, who were attending their week-long Young Priests annual retreat at the Good Shepherd Seminary.
