Birthday surprise for Fr Francis Andrew

SITIAWAN: On August 30, parishioners of the Church of St Francis De Sales (SFDS) came together to surprise their shepherd, Fr Francis Andrew, on his 71st birthday.

The event, organised by the Parish Council, was secretly planned to ensure Fr Francis remained unaware. The celebration, held at Ah Hing Restaurant, was attended by 270 parishioners, along with Fr Francis’ family members.

Attendees, all dressed in the event's theme colours of red or beige, eagerly awaited Fr Francis’ arrival. He was brought to the restaurant under the pretence of a simple birthday treat, only to be greeted with a packed hall filled with joyful parishioners, including members of various ministries, BEC groups, and the migrant community.

The celebration began with an opening prayer by emcee Peter Francis, followed by a speech from PPC chairman Edwin Raj. Before dinner was served, Fr Francis was invited to cut his birthday cake, marking the official start of the evening’s festivities. The evening continued with several performances by parishioners, adding a lively and festive atmosphere to the occasion.

Fr Francis, visibly moved by the outpouring of love and appreciation, expressed his gratitude for the thoughtful gesture. After being ordained in 2006, Fr Francis served in several parishes before being appointed parish priest of SFDS in 2022. The celebration reflected the deep bond between Fr Francis and the SFDS community, a bond strengthened through his dedicated pastoral care. --Dr Mary Thomas
