MEMBAKUT (Herald Malaysia): On May 1, Rt. Rev Datuk Cornelius Piong the Bishop of Keningau Diocese presided over Bro. Joseph Philip’s Final Profession Mass at St Patrick’s Church, with Fr Paul Mikin and Fr Charles Chiew concelebrating. The Brothers from Melaka and Singapore attended the celebration. Bro Francis Chua, the Provincial Superior of Malaysia – Singapore Province accepted the vows of Bro Joseph. In congratulating Bro Joseph, Bishop Piong expressed his gratitude to Bro Joseph’s parents for giving their son to the Congregation and hoped that there would be many more to follow in his footsteps.

Bro Joseph Philip (SG) is a member of the Congregation of the Brothers of St Gabriel (BSG). He hails from Kampung Talantang, Ulu Bongawan. “Fourteen years ago I was deeply moved by the urge to find out who Jesus Christ is. My quest to know who Jesus is has been the passion and driving force of my life since, because only Jesus Christ had risen from the dead and no one else. This question was cleaved into my heart and mind soon after the passing of my sister whom I loved dearly in 1997. It was because of this incident that I got involved in church activities. I felt the comfort of God’s presence in my life and in my involvement in the Church. Each passing day increased my desire to draw closer to God and submit myself to Him. The deep yearning for God led me to follow the RCIA class in St Patrick’s Church. My thirst and longing for God drew me to commit and dedicate my life to God.” he shared.

Bro Joseph’s faith was strengthened through the Sacrament of Confirmation where he was accepted at St Patrick Membakut Parish in 2001. That same year, he responded to God’s calling by serving in the Lord’s vineyard through the Congregation of the Brothers of St Gabriel and was accepted as candidate and aspirant. In 2003, he enrolled into the Novitiate in Chiang Mai, Thailand where he underwent the two years of religious formation. He faced his trials and challenges with humility and perseverance. He went through novitiate life full of thanksgiving and surrendering his life to God.

In May 2005, Bro Joseph made his first profession at Montfort Youth Training Centre, Penampang, whereupon he was posted to Montfort Youth Centre in Melaka for his tenure of two years. In 2007, he was transferred to MBT Shah Alam to continue his ministry while at the same time pursuing his study in psychology. In 2011, he went to the Philippines to do a basic course in theology for one year. Upon returning from the Philippines, he was posted to MYTC. Through the encouragement and support of the Brothers, he became a permanent member of the BSG. He is ever grateful because it was the Sacrament of Confirmation which he received at St Patrick’s Church, Membakut that initiated his journey of faith in the religious life.
