SELAYANG: Lent is a time of fasting and repentance, of moderation and spiritual discipline. We do our best to experience what our Lord went through for 40 days in the wilderness. Like Christ, we too face temptations and tribulations and, like Christ ,we must learn to say no to worldly desires and wants with the help of prayer and self-sacrifice. The youths of Christ the King (CTK) planned seven activities for the season of Lent which brought them closer to Christ:

CTK’s Soup Kitchen

The Youths kicked off the Lenten season with charitable work. A 30 member team distributed food they had packed with the assistance of the parishioners. This was done around the Chow Kit area of KL at dinner time. They followed this up with prayer and reflection.

Movie Reflection
In response to the call by the Church to emphasize the topic of “Integrity” during this Lent, the youth had a viewing of a specially selected short movie. After the screening there was a sharing where they reflected on how much integrity plays a role in their day to day activities.

Green House Exhibition
The Lenten theme “Say No To Climate Change” was the inspiration for an exhibition that highlighted the need to better understand the ills and effects of climate change. Different interactive booths were set up that displayed information on a multitude of topics related to the environment. Those who attended learned about the correct way to recycle, gained greater awareness on global warming and even found out why you should not use styrofoam cups. There were many other exciting activities, not least the signature campaign of a letter of petition addressed to the PM.

#SBABJulian @ Santai with Archbishop Julian
This was an awesome get together organized by Asayo. Many youth representatives from different parishes joined in an open dialogue session with our Archbishop Julian Leow. Some important topics were discussed, including what happens after the HERALD’s “Allah” case and the immediate danger facing our brothers and sisters from east Malaysia. King’s Voice Parishioners of CTK were invited to spend an evening in quiet meditation while reflecting on their personal journey through Lent. After the Way of the Cross, the programme moved on to the Decalogue traversing through the commandments in detail. Questions relating to each of the commandments were discussed to serve as a spiritual checklist to measure how far one has departed from God. At the end of the night, most left with a strong urge to repair their relationship with the Lord through confession. Mind Blowing Journey #MBJ On Palm Sunday, the youths took to the streets with their message to Save The Environment. These Green Warriors of CTK walked the streets of Selayang Baru meeting people and creating awareness on the dangers of climate change. They garnered almost 80 signatures for the “Say No To Climate Change” petition. A discussion on how to make this world a better place to live in was the fitting conclusion for this “Mind Blowing Journey”.

Passion Play
Over nine weeks of preparation and participation of over 40 youths culminated in a truly memorable and touching staging of the Passion Play, as attested to by many who attended the Good Friday service. Those who took part prepared for their roles not just by memorizing their lines but also by fasting and prayers. Their dedication and tireless efforts came to fruition in a performance that gave the audience a glimpse of the suffering our Lord went through on that fateful day 2000 years ago.

This year’s Lent proved to be a challenge to the youths of Christ the King. A challenge that they accepted freely and committed to fully. In doing so, they were able to experience Lent like never before and, at the same time, bring the positive message of Christ’s plan for our salvation to the world around them.

The youths would like to thank Fr Albet Arokiasamy for always encouraging them to be true agents of Christ. His strong support for the youth ministry is a constant inspiration for the youths and has enabled them to fully dedicate their time and effort for the glory of Christ. Vive Christus Rex! -- By CTK Youth
