SUNGAI PETANI, Kedah:
18 candidates from the Church of Christ the King received the Sacrament of Confirmation during sunset Mass, November 12.

Bishop Sebastian Francis in his sermon said that they were being sent forth as missionaries of God and should not be passive believers of the faith. Touching on the lives of the Asian martyrs and saints who had sacrificed their lives for God, he questioned if the candidates were willing to be martyrs and saints in witnessing their faith to others.

“The younger generation must continue to carry the mantle of martyrdom and sainthood, which is a life of sacrifice in building God’s kingdom. It is a sacrifice of our time and resources as we go out and serve.

We cannot live a life of stagnation as we must fulfil the call to bring the good news to others,” he said, adding that such a life required courage and was possible through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Bishop Francis, who had attended the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conference (FABC) in Bangkok recently, said that the lives of the Asian saints and martyrs should be emulated by the young people. He added that as peoples of Asia, we had our very own saints and martyrs at our doorstep and we can follow their examples of holy living and challenged them to do so.

A week earlier the candidates had a day long Confirmation camp in the church pastoral centre to prepare them for the momentous day.
