PENANG: Bishop Sebastian Francis conferred the Sacrament of Confirmation on six candidates from Risen Christ Catholic (RCC) Church. It was the strengthening of faith by the Holy Spirit for Issac Kishen Vincent, Juwita Beatrice Michael, Mabel Yeoh Chai Yi, Catherine Avins, Sherilyn Christie Jassil and Ethan Spencer Ooi Eng Leong, witnessed by their godparents and the parishioners. Parish priest, Fr Arul Mariadass OFM and Fr Crispus Mosinoh were concelebrants at the Mass.

In his homily, Bishop Sebastian reminded that the Sacrament of Confirmation does not mark the end of formal religious education but rather, it is the beginning of a journey for a deeper knowledge, understanding and commitment to our faith. He called the confirmands “Young Disciples” and with this comes the responsibility to be true witnesses of our faith through the workings of the Holy Spirit. From now they must take on more adult responsibilities for the faith and remain faithful to their baptismal commitment.

Bishop Sebastian then recited the new Litany of the Saints and Martyrs of Asia with the congregation. He explained that this new Litany includes saints from Asia including Malaysia and it was compiled by the Federation of the Asian Bishops’ Conference (FABC) which celebrated its 50th anniversary recently. He went on to say that the Churches of Asia were built on the blood of these Saints and Martyrs.

The Asian churches have the greatest number of martyrs throughout history. He explained that although there are no saints of Malaysian origin, Sts Philip Minh and companions (Vietnam) and Sts Chastan and Imbert (MEP, d. Korea) have been attributed to Malaysia because these Saints were seminarians at College General. He advised all parish priests to actively introduce this new Litany to their parishioners. Newly confirmed candidate, Isaac, thanked Bishop Sebastian for his presence and blessings and parish priest, Fr Arul for journeying with them until this moment.

After Mass, the congregation took the opportunity to celebrate Bishop Sebastian’s 71st birthday with the cutting of the cake. The celebration ended with fellowship at the church hall.
