PETALING JAYA (Herald Malaysia): The Assunta Children’s Home located in Petaling Jaya urgently needed dictionaries for their children who are given tuition daily. These dictionaries will assist the students in their daily school work guided by the teachers. An appeal was made and our YOUTH from St. Thomas More Church BEC USJ 3ABCD came to their rescue.

The youths were informed of this need by the Chief Coordinator and they got into action at once. Youth Coordinator, Ms Sharmaine Deva, rounded up the youths from our BEC and requested them to network with their school and college mates to go on a “donate a dictionary drive.” Within a week the youths were able to collect 45 dictionaries, some second hand and others new ones purchased by their parents.

On Saturday, 3rd May 2014, the youths and their parents visited the home and presented the dictionaries to the children. To go one step further the youths conducted a short lesson on how to use the dictionaries effectively and ended up with a quiz where the children participated enthusiastically. Gerard and Vivian acted as —Che’gus for the day and injected the element of fun in the process. The other youths guided the children who were divided into 4 groups participating in the quiz. Food and drinks were served at the end of the session.
