The ushering in of the New Year sometimes brings about mixed feelings. On the one hand, we are excited about new beginnings and more interesting possibilities; on the other hand, we are apprehensive about what the future will unfold.

If we want to make a difference, we need to ‘decide’. Paulo Coelho rightly puts it in The Alchemist, “When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” A vast horizon is open, with new possibilities. Firm determination will not allow opportunities to slip. We need to focus on things that matter … on what means most in life.

Sometimes, we don’t know what it is we’re after. We only know we’re looking for something. There’s a yearning in our hearts and we await that “Aha, I got it” moment, but perhaps what we really need is an “Aha, it’s got me” moment. It’s a moment that awakens us to the deep desires of our hearts, touches the longings of our life, and fills the absence in such a way that we get up and go, change our life, know ourselves in a new way, and travel along a different road.

This is our first issue for 2022. When the team met to start putting it together, we didn’t aim for sweeping changes. Instead, we did everything like how we had in the past few months - tinkering with new ideas, brainstorming in small ways on how the paper could gradually change.

Our new masthead is a major change and there are glimmers of our ideas and inspiration in some of the pages. These changes might not seem like much, but it’s all part of the continual renewal process — helping us create a newspaper that better meets your needs.

This year, we plan to keep altering, innovating and challenging our current standards. In the coming weeks and months, we will also be making changes to our website and enhancing our social media presence. We want to keep evolving and growing – showing you who we really are, not just by our stories but by how we present them.

We are also interested in what you have to say about the paper. News is a conversation – the better we listen, the better we are able to serve our readers. If there’s something happening in your parish that you think people should know about, do contact the editorial team. If you have an opinion – send a letter to the editor. If you’d like to tell us how we can improve our coverage in any area, let us know.

We resolve to make resolutions as we go. Our only requirement is that we know who we’re writing for. If you’re reading the paper every week, then this year is for you.

Happy New Year from the HERALD team!
