At the Sunset Mass on May 24, 2014, His Grace Archbishop Emeritus Murphy Pakiam administered the Sacrament of Confirmation on 86 Catholic youths at the Church of St Ignatius (SIC).

“Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit”. With these words and anointing with Chrism, His Grace, assisted by SIC Parish Priest Fr Lucas Ng, conferred the Sacrament of Confirmation on the 86 Candidates. The Rite of Confirmation, witnessed by sponsors, families, friends and fellow Catholics, took place during the 6.00pm sunset Mass in a packed Church.

The 86 Confirmands consisted of 65 students from the English-speaking Sunday school, 20 students from the Mandarin-speaking Sunday School and an adult.

The congregation witnessed the important sacrament as the Confirmands were anointed with the Oil of Chrism to signify the special outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Confirmation brings an increase and deepening of baptismal grace, unites us more firmly to Christ, increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us, and renders our bond with the Church more perfect.

After Communion, Fr Lucas Ng, informed the congregation that Archbishop Emeritus Pakiam celebrated 50 years as a priest in May this year. The Altar Servers then wheeled in an Anniversary Cake much to the surprise of the Prelate. He smiled with appreciation and then cut the cake while the congregation sang ‘Happy Anniversary’. The prelate has served 50 years as priest and bishop and, God willing, shall continue actively serving in his ministry.
