Some 469 longhouse folks, mostly the elderly and young children at Tuai Rumah John Guan Anak Barraw at Pasir Nangka Sangan, Tatau, were made homeless when their 54-door longhouse was destroyed by fire in the early morning on 10 October 2014.
Almost half of the longhouse’s working adults were not around at the time of the fire as most of them were working in the nearby oil palm estates and towns such as Bintulu. The cause of the fire is being investigated and is still unknown at this time.
The Bread of St Anthony, a charity arm of St Anthony’s Church, headed by Charles Wong and assisted by Theodora Ling, upon receiving the distress call immediately responded by sending used clothing and a cash donation to the affected families.
The travelling time between Bintulu and Pasir Nangka Sangan is more than two hours along the timber logging roads.
