Pope Francis often brings up the important role women play as models of faith. In his general audience catechesis for April 3, 2013, he recalled that it was women who were chosen by God as the first witnesses of the Resurrection, the cornerstone of our faith.
“This also makes us think about how women, in the Church and on the journey of faith, had, and still have, today, a special role in opening the doors to the Lord, in following him and in communicating his face, for the gaze of faith is always in need of the simple and profound gaze of love,” Pope Francis said.
If you recall, he continued, it was the men, the apostles, who found it hard to believe that the Lord had risen.
“The women, not so,” the Pope said.
He later pointed out that it was only after the women, with joy and love, proclaimed the Resurrection — as Thomas asked for tangible proof — others also believed.
“After his [Jesus’] appearances to the women, others follow,” he said.
