Hyderabad’s oldest Catholic Church gets a facelift

BOLARAM: The 173-year old St. Francis Xavier’s Church in Bolaram, one of the oldest Catholic Churches in the city, had its rededication and re-inauguration on Nov 29.

“Refurbished with a whole new classy modern touch in its original structure, the Church’s soul was kept intact during the refurbishing,” says the Parish Priest.

The high-roofed Gregorian styled church (1842) had been seeking attention for renovation for over a decade now, but lacked funds as it had limited number of families as parishioners. A team of parishioners came together this year and constituted the restoration and renovation committee.

The entire operation was executed in three months. At its first look the most capturing sight is a big wooden door. Every step reverberates sound through the entire church. There is a new set of pews, which match the little metal with wood corridor on the altar. The church is well lit during the day, thanks to old windows and light inlets way up on its walls.

Personnel from the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) analysed the Church building to help refurbish it. Co-convenor INTACH, P Anuradha Reddy made a mention about the organisation’s efforts to make the building a heritage site.

Archbishop Thumma Bala of Hyderabad and many priests were present at the event.--Ucannews.com
