BANGALORE: The Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) has announced the establishment of five-member National Councils for each of its Commissions, in a move aimed at bolstering teamwork and representation.

The decision was made during the CCBI’s 95th Executive Committee meeting in September, according to CCBI Secretariat.

The new structure was a result of the CCBI’s extensive year-long Pastoral Plan consultation, which gathered insights from more than 5,000 members of the Catholic Church in India, including bishops, clergy, religious leaders, and laypeople.

A key recommendation from the consultation was the creation of National Councils to better reflect the Church’s diverse realities across the country.

Previously, each Commission included an Executive Secretary, a Chairman Bishop, and two member Bishops.

With the new framework, five additional members will be appointed to the councils, ensuring the representation of women, religious leaders, and laypeople.

These members will be chosen for their expertise and experience, with the goal of improving the overall functionality of the Commissions.

To ensure the smooth implementation of the Pastoral Plan, the CCBI has also established a “Facilitation Committee.” This committee will monitor the progress and effectiveness of the newly formed National Councils.

The CCBI Secretariat said the bishops are hopeful that these initiatives will encourage greater participation and teamwork within the Church, strengthening its mission for the future.--licas.news
