Travelling from the historical state of Kedah, the Youth Cross arrived on beautiful sunny Penang Island!

Year 2022 marks the Fifth Penang Diocesan Youth Day (PDYD-5).

PDYD-5 will be held over four days, from October 21 to 24, 2022. To kickstart the PDYD-5 journey, a Mass was held in the Church of The Immaculate Conception (CIC) on Dec 4, 2021. CIC was chosen as it resonates with the PDYD-5 theme: Mary arose and went with haste (Luke 1:39).

From 10.30am, participants started streaming into CIC. The launch was carried out both physically and virtually. Due to the strict Standard Operating Procedures in place, physical attendance was limited to the young people from parishes within Penang Island. Youth from the Diocese of Penang were also provided the link to participate via livestreaming.

The Mass was celebrated by Fr Simon Anand, the head of the Penang Diocesan Youth Network. Concelebrating with him were Fr Jude Miranda from CIC, Fr Arul Mariadass from Risen Christ Church, Air Itam and Fr Joachim Robert from the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Georgetown.

At the start of the launching ceremony, five separate parts of the Youth Cross was processed into CIC. Upon reaching the sanctuary, the five parts were assembled into one complete Youth Cross. This complete Youth Cross symbolises the unity in being Witnesses of Christ responding to the call of mission, the mission of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. This Cross will be entrusted to the young people as they are commissioned to carry it throughout the Diocese of Penang as a symbol of Christ’s love for humanity.

The Youth Cross embarked on its maiden journey with the young people from the Diocese of the Penang Deanery back in 2012 and has since been making it’s pilgrimage from deanery to deanery, and from parish to parish.

Following the Youth Cross are flag bearers from Penang, Perak, Perlis, Kedah and Kelantan, representing the Diocese of Penang. Joining the procession is the Jalur Gemilang which brings to mind the image of Unity among the young people of diverse backgrounds.

Images of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Pope John Paul II, the saint and the father figure of the Young People, continue to accompany this Youth Cross on its journey. The young people were reminded of Pope St John Paul II’s message for World Youth Day 2003: “Mary was given to you to help you enter into a more authentic and more personal relationship with Jesus. Through her example, Mary teaches you to gaze on Him with love, for He has loved us first.”

Fr Simon Anand then commissioned the following items which will be passed to the young people:

1) Memorare of PDYD-5 – to be displayed at the respective parishes until the main celebration of PDYD-5 in October 2022. This Memorare symbolises the following :-

For young people to be empowered, united and to courageously walk the faith with haste.

-- To encourage young people to discern their vocations.

-- To strengthen the bond and build bridges among young people of diverse backgrounds.

-- To empower young people to serve within and beyond the church.

-- To rekindle their spirit and encourage young people to put their faith into action.

2) Youth Mission Cross and Prayer to St John Paul II – a mini version of the Youth Cross to remind the young people that Jesus is always within their reach and always holds them near, He never abandons His Children; and a prayer to the Saint to whom we seek intercession throughout the PDYD-5 journey.

The launching ceremony and Mass closed with the recessional hymn: Kita Dipilih (We are Chosen). Young People are reminded that we did not choose God, God chose us — to go and produce fruit, to do the Father’s will and to be witnesses of His love. The Holy Spirit strengthens us and we work with the power of Jesus Christ, our Lord.

To all young people of the Diocese of Penang, See you in October 2022!
