BUKIT MERTAJAM: For many of the youth leaders, it was their first time meeting their counterparts from different parishes. They went home knowing each other better, with aspirations for the growth of the youth ministry.

March 11-13, eighty youth leaders, from the five states in the Diocese, converged at Domus St Anne for the second edition of the Diocese of Penang’s Youth Congress, with the theme Echoing God’s Mercy. Organized by the Penang Diocesan Youth Network (PDYN), the congress was aimed at creating a closer network among youth groups, while providing a platform for them to speak and enhance their spiritual lives as they joined a preparatory session leading to the Diocesan Synod in May 2016.

The youths were introduced to the YOUCAT spirituality by Fr Simon Anand, Sr Margarete Sta Maria, FdCC and Simon Chan. There were three topics: Yearning for God and Understanding Our Faith, Contemplating God’s Word and Trust in God and Availability for Service and Outreach to the Poor.

“Man was created by God, and the desire for God is written in our hearts.” This was shared by Simon as he encouraged the youths to encounter Christ personally while rediscovering their faith. He said that God never ceases to draw man to Himself.

Fr Simon spoke on service and outreach. He shared nine points on mission from St John Paul II, which highlighted ways on how Catholics can better share their faith.

“Your life reflects Jesus, people must see Him in you,” said Fr Simon, while highlighting that youths are more engaging with their fellow peers. He encouraged the youths to use this advantage to share the story of Jesus to their friends.

Taizé prayer was held to help the participants better contemplate the Word of God. There was a prayerful atmosphere as the youths were moved through the repeated chanting of hymns.

“Allow God to speak to you through His Word, and listen to His voice,” said Sr Margarete, while encouraging the youths to practise Lectio Divina which focuses on Scriptures.

One of the highlights of the congress was when the youths were introduced to an appreciative inquiry called the S.O.A.R. (Strength, Opportunity, Aspiration and Result) analysis by Ramesh Victor. “Turn your weaknesses to opportunities, and look at your strengths,” shared Ramesh as he highlighted the approach for developing a SOAR plan.

All youth leaders were asked to identify the strengths and opportunities that they see presently. They were also challenged to build aspirations and the results that they seek.

The leaders openly shared their concerns and feedback towards current issues. Many of them gave positive ideas and feedback as they focused on the vision and mission statement of youths in the Diocese for the next few years.

The Closing Mass was celebrated by Bishop Sebastian Francis, with Fr Simon Anand concelebrating. In his homily, Bishop Sebastian reminded the leaders that God’s mercy reaches out to all people; therefore, everyone must be concerned for the goodwill of all.

“God gives us choices, we are free to make decisions for ourselves,” said Bishop Sebastian, while briefly touching on the readings for the day. The Bishop also urged the youths to pray for one another, especially for those whom they have difficulties with.

After Mass, Bishop Sebastian commissioned all youth leaders as they renewed their zeal and commitment. They were all resolved to take personal responsibility and action for their plans.

The participants learned a lot on leadership skills as they shared their personal feelings. “We can now think in a more far sighted manner as well as having a deeper relationship with God,” said Monica Marli and Sonniya from the Church of St Francis de Sales in Sitiawan.

Shannon Joshua from St Michael’s Church, Alor Setar, shared that he rediscovered himself throughout the youth congress. “It was a meaningful time for me, I developed my leadership skills and learnt to be more approachable,” he said.

Another participant from the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Penang, was glad that youth leaders from the three deaneries are now having closer relations. Nicholas Khor said, “Christ has confidence in us young people and has entrusted us with His mission; we are the powerful engines for the Church and for society.”

Thankful for the support of the Parish Priests and the youth’s parents, Daniel Roy of PDYN expressed that it will be easier for them to plan and implement programmes for formation after listening to the youth leaders’ aspirations for the Youth Ministry of Penang Diocese. -- By Aaron Lim
