Light of Hope - Second Week of Advent: Prepare the way of the Lord

Loving Jesus, In your name, we mark this season: As we bring forth light to defy the claims of darkness, As we bring forth joy and song to defy the claims of sadness, As we bring forth a spirit of generosity to defy the claims of want, As we bring forth peace to defy the claims of war.

Opening Prayer
Loving Jesus, In your name, we mark this season: As we bring forth light to defy the claims of darkness, As we bring forth joy and song to defy the claims of sadness, As we bring forth a spirit of generosity to defy the claims of want, As we bring forth peace to defy the claims of war. That in the darkest, saddest, most wanting, warring corner of the world, All may look to Bethlehem Where, in the humblest of circumstances, In a time of repression From the person of a poor refugee woman In the filth of a manger In the form of a most vulnerable child You came among us to say, “No, there is a light in this world.” Let us be this light to others. Let us be the fruit of the branch of Jesse’s tree. Let us be the bearers of the indescribable gift that is your grace And so defy all false claims on your people and their dignity. And so, may you be born anew, into every season Into every age Into every land and every human heart. Maranatha! Come, Lord Jesus, come. Amen

GOSPEL READING: LUKE 3:1-6 John preaches repentance and baptises in the region of the Jordan.

Reflection
John’s preaching of the coming of the Lord is a key theme of the Advent season. As John’s message prepared the way for Jesus, we too are called to repent and prepare ourselves during Advent, to reform our lives. Do I announce the good news like John did? Or do I live egoistically, placing my desires over the needs of our brothers and sisters in need?

What and how would you make a change this Advent?

What would happen to me if I chose not to repent? Is there any area in my life that God wants me to repent?

FOR FAMILY/MINISTRIES:
What struck us in the Scripture that we have just heard? How can we repent and change as family/ ministry to share the good news to our family, church members and the people around us?

FOR INDIVIDUALS:
Spend time to reflect and discern words from the Scripture that struck you. What change should I make this Advent? Take note and share your reflection with your companion at a convenient time.

CONCRETE ACTION:
Pray the Act of Contrition and go to the Sacrament of Reconciliation. If it is not possible, then make an act of reconciliation in your own way directly to the Lord. Make sure you avail yourself of the Sacrament of Reconciliation when conditions permit.

INTERCESSORY PRAYER / CLOSING PRAYER
Lord, forgive (my/her/his) sins, help (me/friends/family’s name) to renew my relationship with You, others, and myself, acknowledging that we are all connected. Give us courage to reach out to others and to share your word by our action, like John the Baptist.
