PETALING JAYA: What makes one have a sudden urge to connect with God through His word? Perhaps it is a desire for some semblance of serenity or direction amid life’s organised chaos. Or it may well be just a thirst for a deeper understanding of who God is.

Whatever the reason, the words of Psalm 42:2 (“As the deer longs for streams of water, so my soul longs for you, O God”) are symbolic of all that the Assumption Bible Group (ABG) has stood for since its inception in 2002. Founded by the late Dr Marcel Fernandez, ABG has been a watering hole for the thirsty over the last two decades. Held every Tuesday evening, it was there that one could offer the week’s turmoil to the Lord, and it was there that one received valuable scriptural insights on everyday living. It was there too that strong bonds and lasting friendships were formed through faith-sharing sessions.

On September 6, ABG began a 20-part DVD series on the Acts of the Apostles: The Spread of the Kingdom by Jeff Cavins and Sarah Christmyer. This study is the third of a three-part foundational Bible study series that began with an overview of Scripture in The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation and continued into Matthew: The King and His Kingdom. Matthew introduces Jesus Christ, the Messiah, who fulfils all of God’s promises to Israel and establishes God’s kingdom on earth. The Acts of the Apostles shows the work of Christ continuing beyond His resurrection. It is a story of empowerment, of being filled with the Holy Spirit and of witness. In this 20-week study, one is able to relive the Spirit-filled lives of Christ’s first disciples and especially that of His two ‘super apostles’, Peter and Paul.

Sessions are conducted at Dewan Volle, Church of the Assumption, Petaling Jaya, on Tuesdays from 8.00-10.00pm. ABG uses a hybrid approach, which presents new opportunities to optimise the reach of God’s word to those whose movements are restricted and those on the peripheries. Now in its 20th year, ABG remains a place where hearts and minds are transformed through the living Word of God. Come and see.
