KUALA LUMPUR: One of FBI's most wanted terrorists, Malaysian Zulkifli Khir @ Marwan, had planned attacks to coincide with Pope Francis’s visit to the Philippines recently, Utusan Malaysia reported on Jan 29.

Quoting a source, the report said that Philippines intelligence had obtained information on planned attacks against the world Catholic leader, which prompted the authorities to mount security measures for the papal visit.

“He was believed to have planned a series of bombing attacks in the Philippines and apparently during the Pope’s visit, Zulkifli had planned to instigate acts of violence.

“So the ambush by the Philippines authorities last Sunday was to pressure Zulkifli and his group based on the information they got and in the end, he lost,” the source reportedly said.

Zulkifli is believed to have been killed following a shootout with security forces in Cotabato, southern Philippines. -- The Malaysian Insider
