There are many Catholic Sabahans and Sarawakians studying and working in Penang. With this in mind, the Penang Island parishes decided to have a combined Bahasa Mass every alternate Sunday to cater to this group.
Beginning from May 3, 2015, the Bahasa Mass is celebrated every 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month at 10.00 am at the Church of St Francis Xavier, Penang Road.
The Mass is celebrated by Fr Stanley Antoni, who is very well versed in Bahasa Malaysia.
In the beginning, only about 20 parishioners were present but attendance has been steadily picking up, after encouragement from Fr Stanley. He encouraged the parishioners to bring more people, especially the Sabahans and Sarawakians.
At the Mass on 5 July, there were about 50 parishioners, and it was at this Mass that an intention for the Sabah earthquake victims was offered up.
In solidarity with the victims of the earthquake in Sabah, the Diocese of Penang, through the Penang Office of Human Development (POHD), will contribute RM50,000 to the Archdiocese of Kota Kinabalu for their Sabah Earthquake Relief efforts.
