LAHAD DATU (Herald Malaysia): The Parish Youth Apostolate team held a meeting with the youth representatives from the Outstation parishes on June 15 at St Dominic’s Church. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss and share some of the common issues on the state and development of the youth and at the same time to bring about a closer relationship between the youths from St Dominic’s parish and those from outstation. Those invited were from Silam, Tungku, Madai, Kunak and Felda but only representatives from Kunak, Madai and Felda attended the meeting.

The meeting began with an Ice Breaker and an opening prayer by Sr Evelyn Tivit which was followed with an introduction to the Diocese of Sandakan which comprises the four parishes of Lahad Datu, Tawau, Sandakan and Telupid.

The next session on the challenges, development and activities relating to the outstation youths was conducted by Victoria Yam. The representatives expressed their hopes for the development of the youth in the foreseeable future. Overall the problems facing the youth are the lack of facilities and cooperation, racism, and ideas to attract them to participate in activities, communication between youth as well as finance. It cannot be denied that lack of finances makes it difficult to enable the youths to carry out activities.

The Youth Apostolate team took the opportunity to share with the representatives ideas on how to organize fund-raising events in their respective areas.

New information was also shared on the Fourth Sabah Youth Day with Hari Jony explaining the rules and regulations for those who may be interested in participating in the song and logo contest for SYD4 which is now open until the end of August. This contest is open to all Catholic youths. Maureen also introduced the Student Ministry to the representatives and asked them to get to know the programmes that have been provided by the Church to help those youth who are planning to continue their studies elsewhere. The meeting ended at 4.30pm.
