Msgr Michael Cheah, the Parish Priest of the Church of the Immaculate Conception celebrated his Silver Jubilee as a priest on Sunday August 31.

The 8.30am Mass was concelebrated with Archbishop Emeritus Soter Fernandez, who came from Kuala Lumpur for this joyful occasion. In his homily, His Grace touched on the gospel reading of the day, and the obstacles along the way in our journey of life. “The ways of God are often not the ways of men” he said.

He also recalled that 25 years ago, he did not attend the ordination of Msgr. Michael Cheah even though he was in Ipoh for the occasion, as he suffered a heart attack the morning of the ordina-tion. Therefore, he made it a point to come to Penang for Msgr Cheah’s Silver Jubilee.

Present at the Eucharistic celebrations that morning were Msgr Cheah’s 93 year old mother, his siblings, and the Mother Provincial of the Little Sisters of the Poor, Mother Charlotte, from Hong Kong together with a few Sisters.

At the end of the Mass, there was a video presentation “Celebrating 25 years of Faithfulness”. In this powerpoint presentation, pictures were shown of his childhood and growing up years in Ipoh, seminary days and his further studies in Rome. Also shown were some milestones in his journey as a priest viz. the building of the present St Anne’s Church and complex in Bukit Mertajam; the extensive renovations in St Michael’s Church, Ipoh and Church of the Immaculate Conception, Penang. Also depicted were some of Msgr Cheah’s pastoral activities carried out throughout the years in the various parishes he had served and is currently serving.

The Parish Pastoral Chairman, Bernard Bhar, in his speech thanked and congratulated Mgsr Cheah on behalf of the parish. A purse was then presented by Bhar and Datuk Tan Heng Kheng (Chairman of the Parish Finance Committee) to Msgr Michael Cheah on behalf of the Parish. The national anthem was sung. After Mass, everyone adjourned next door for the Parish Family Day.
