PHILIPPINES: On 30th May, up to 6,000 people will travel to Pasay City in the Philippines, for the Second National Conference on New Evangelization. The Conference is part of a series of events organised by the Bishops Conference of the Philippines entitled “Nine Years of Evangelization,” which will culminate in the 500th Anniversary of the Gospel being brought to the Islands.

The conference hopes to build upon the work of last year’s event, which used the word “Blessed” as it’s theme, drawn from the words of Jesus “Blessed are you” during the Beatitudes. Therefore the Catholic Bishop’s Conference of the Philippines has drawn up 3 aims for this year’s conference, to help the participants understand the true meaning of blessedness as modeled by Jesus (Encounter with Jesus),to explore avenues and pathways that lead to a blessed life (Experience of Church) and to offer opportunities for individual and communal living out of the beatitudes (Witnessing to Blessedness).

This year’s conference will focus particularly on the Church’s commitment to the poor. The day will feature a mixture of debates and testimonies, as well as an exhibition of the activities of various Catholic Charities, Parishes and groups in the country, focusing on building a “Poor Church for the poor” as inspired by Pope Francis.

“"The poor are the presence of Jesus among us, Look at Jesus, look at the poor and then look at yourself and realize that we are the poor of Jesus. When you look at Jesus as if you were looking in a mirror, you see who you really are" explains Archbishop Socrates B. Villegas of Lingayen-Dagupan.

The aim of the conference is to encourage and empower Catholics to Evangelize in the Philippines, ahead of the 500th Anniversary of the Evangelization of the Islands themselves.

The events are open to the public and free to attend. --Vatican Radio
