In preparation for the MJD Golden Jubilee celebration, YOUth are invited to reflect and pray through a series of brochures based on Christus Vivit!

Pope Francis opened his Apostolic Exhortation with the declaration Christus Vivit (CV) – Christ is alive! This post-Synodal Exhortation was given by the Holy Father at Loreto, Italy on March 25, 2019. Inspired by this truth, this series of reflection material prepared by the young leaders of the Malacca Johore Diocese hopes to share the nine Chapters of Christus Vivit in their own unique way. We pray this reflection material may be a source of encounter with Jesus Christ our Lord, for you and your community.

These reflection materials are available in four languages for the different age groups; youth (13-17), campus students (18-24) and young adults (18-39).

You can download the digital copy here: https://mjdiocese.my/wps/wp-content/uploads/ 2021/12/MJD-50-Reflection-Material- 1-English-Youth.pdf

Recognise - Interpret - Choose (RIC) is a method of spiritual accompaniment and discernment introduced by Pope Francis in Evangelii Gaudium (169-173) and continued in the documents of the Synod on Young People, especially the Working Document (3, 112-115), the Final Document (4, 97) and CV itself (236- 37). We propose that you use the RIC method for reflection and sharing, along with this brochure, whether you are by yourself or with your youth groups, CSSs or CFs!

RECOGNISE
To look and listen, to be aware of what it is that strikes or nudges me as I read this text. What image, word, or phrase pops up? Naming the ‘what’ of the matter helps you focus.

INTERPRET
Understanding the ‘what’ through the eyes of faith. What does what I've recognised mean for me?

Interpretation is not done alone, it happens with the vast treasure of Scripture, Church teaching, spiritual accompaniment, our local Church communities and our own personal experience.

CHOOSE
How can I respond concretely to what I’ve recognised and interpreted? What choice or action must I make? — MJDYPN

                      January Youth are special

King David was chosen while
still a young boy!

The older and more experienced sons
were offered as candidates to be the
future King.

Yet the prophet Samuel said that the
chosen one was the young David!
For “man looks on the outward
appearance, but the Lord looks on the
heart” (1 Sam 16:7).

The glory of youth is in the heart, more
than in physical strength or impression
given to others (CV9).

This is exactly how God sees young people. God acknowledges the potential of young people and highly regards us, even in olden times!

Personal reflection
1. Do you recall a time when you were underestimated simply because you were “too young”?

2. What do you think you can do to maximise your potential as a youth?

Group reflection
Read 1 Samuel 16 to find out more about how David was anointed King.

After five to 10 minutes, share in your groups on:

1. Which verse struck you the most and why?

2. Why do you think God chose David, and not his older brothers?
