Seniors and youth of the Church of St Francis of Assisi came together to make the celebration of the Day for Grandparents and the Elderly a memorable one.

The senior group known as SFA Silver Liners ministry collaborated with the young people to organise several activities to commemorate the special day.

During the weekend Masses of July 23 and 24, pews were reserved for the grandparents and elderly along the main aisle. A special video dedication was prepared by youths from the different language groups to pay tribute to the grandparents and elderly who have showered them with much love and care.

After a special blessing by the celebrant at each Mass, the senior citizens received gifts and prayer cards from the youths. Arrangements were also made to present gifts and prayer cards to the home-bound elderly through Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion.

The Silver Liners leaders together with four youths from the Youth Ministry visited the nearby Infant Jesus (IJ) Convent and had tea with the resident nuns. Due to health and safety precautions, only a small group of visitors were allowed. The visitors had a good time, chatting with the sisters and listening to their stories.

Another activity organised by the Silver Liners was a talk on ‘Growing Old Gracefully’, presented by Dr Valerie Jacques, a specialist in Clinical Psychology. The one-hour session was attended by 40 parishioners including parish priest Fr Paul Cheong, OFM Cap.

Thanking Dr Valerie for the inspiring session, Fr. Paul said that he too had benefitted from her sharing. Echoing Fr Paul’s sentiments, the participants requested that similar sessions be organised more often.

All in all, the SFA Silver Liners and the SFA Youth Ministry had a fun-filled weekend working together to make the Day for Grandparents and the Elderly special and enjoyable.
