The Sunday school of the Banda Kaba parish of St Francis Xavier wound up its 2014 term with a thanksgiving Eucharistic Celebration, prize presentation and fellowship on November 23.

The 300-strong enrolment, along with students’ parents, family members and the local faithful attended the occasion.

The school, which not only comprises formal learning in classes, but also informal and fun sessions, is handled by 16 catechists.

For the 2014 term, the Sunday school also conducted pre-First Holy Communion and Sacrament of Confirmation camps, the Catechetical Sunday commemoration, special Masses for the student enrolment and respective families, as well as a series of Eucharistic celebrations for the younger pupils spread over the year. In between, they also participated in gotong royong to clean up the church, visit old folks and the sick, hold games projects as well as spirituality camps.

Also in the works was the introduction of the parents’ sessions which not only helped the school authorities gain feedback from parents and family seniors but also to generate activities and programmes for parent-child bonding.

Among the outstanding students who received special prizes from Fr Micheal Mannayagam were Alston Kuhan Benedict, Alexander Charles Carvalho, Deon Ng Wen Jie, Georgiano Elizabeth and Helen Cecilia Danker.

As Josephine Ovary the Sunday school coordinator summed up, the children, particularly those who will be leaving for good, are the future of the Church. “In today’s increasingly materialistic and secular world, our values, faith and beliefs are threatened. It is vital that our children are guided through their faith formation years so as to help them develop unwavering faith and trust in God,” remarked Josephine.
