Every December, the St Ignatius Church Youth Ministry (SICYM) hosts the SIC Youth Rally. However, during the pandemic, its members couldn’t meet physically, much less host a four-day camp with 200-300 youths. But then, Jesus never said that we had to meet in person to evangelise.

From December 10 to 12, 61 youths gathered via Zoom for SICYM’s first Virtual Youth Rally (VYR)!

Organising an online camp was not easy. Since June 2021, SICYM would meet online or in-person (according to COVID-19 SOPs, of course) to plan, organise, record, and review activities and pray to ensure that Jesus and His Word would be the centre of this camp. The opening night started with a blast. First, the participants welcomed and acknowledged the presence of God with praise and worship. Most of these praise and worship sessions were pre-recorded to minimise disruptions.

Then, they played a round of Human Bingo to break the ice. In this game, the teenagers jumped through several breakout rooms to make new friends and score a bingo in their VYR booklets. These booklets are a part of their care packages which were delivered to their doorstep. The care packages also contained a metal straw set, a game card to help them find more friends, and a candle made by @bern_candles and blessed by Fr Lawrence Ng CDD.

The teenagers also began to feel more comfortable after watching a video of dances, skits and memes by the SICYM members. Opening night ended with a faith formation session.

The sessions for VYR were led by Christopher Luke Felix and John Paul Felix. These brothers, from St Thomas More Church (STM) and ASAYO, have been speakers for previous SIC youth rallies. This year, their sessions were centred on the World Youth Day theme, Stand up! I appoint you as witnesses of what you have seen! (Acts 26:16)

Throughout the camp, the youths participated in activities that brought them closer to each other. For example, during a fun workshop session, the participants had a choice to fold origami tiger bookmarks or bake some chocolate mud cake. They also had fun playing clue-hunting station games, doing challenging quizzes, and talking about anything and everything under the sun during chit-chatchill sessions.

The camp also brought the youths closer to God. Aside from the sessions, the teenagers humbled themselves during Adoration, which was streamed live from SIC, and lifted all they had to God during inner healing. On Sunday morning, the teenagers attended SIC Mass together online.

The camp ended with Family Night: a night for God with live praise and worship, performances and heart-warming messages from our priest, speakers and heads of SICYM. This night was an open event, so families and friends joined in the call as well!

While the days were short, the teachings resonated with the participants, and the memories made were unforgettable. Whether we meet online or in person, it is possible to serve God and praise his glory!
