IPOH (Herald Malaysia): Parishioners of St Michael’s Church (SMC) have contributed RM26,595 towards helping 27 Orang Asli families by sponsoring battery and LED lights for their homes as part of the parish project for this year.
SMC parish priest Fr Stephen Liew, announced this during Mass on May 4.
Last Jan 5, the SMC parish assembly had agreed to adopt the Orang Asli families in Tapah, and is on a mission to help them.
The parish committee has identified a series of initiatives targeted at empowering and improving the lives of Orang Asli families in selected villages.
The first initiative is to provide solar powered lighting to these 27 homes in some villages. A committee formed by SMC parishioners have been entrusted to install the lights for the Orang Asli and help them in other ways.
Currently, the Orang Asli families in question, are depending on oil lamps for light, as the batteries for lights in their homes have been exhausted, and they are unable to afford new ones.
The donations came from BECs, ministries, families and individual parishioners when they were invited to support the initiative by sponsoring one or more sets of the battery and LED lights, at a cost of RM350 per set.
“Our next target is to help them repair their leaking roofs, and we still invite those who wish to donate towards improvement of the homes of Orang Asli.
“This Easter, let us welcome Jesus, the Light of the World, by bringing light to the poorest of the poor. Thank you for your kindness and generosity,” Fr Liew said.
