IPOH (Herald Malaysia): Forty-two Sunday school students of St Michael’s Church (SMC), received certificates of achievement and gift vouchers on Nov 16 for achieving full attendance at Sunday school this year.

The students, ranging from pre-schoolers to fourth formers, received their “awards” from parish priest Fr Stephen Liew, amidst applause from the congregation.

The gift vouchers were for a meal at a restaurant.

Many of those who received certificates were delighted to get them, especially Rebecca David, who is wheelchair-bound. Her parents had to make a special effort to get her to Sunday school on time each week. Many parishioners stopped by to congratulate her after Mass.

Rebecca, 16, said she has her parents and catechists to thank for her faith journey and encouragement during classes.

“I speak up during classes because in that way, I can learn more and be involved in the sessions,” she said.

Although formal catechism ends after Form Four, she said she would still be involved in the church, perhaps singing in the choir.

On how she managed to attend every week without missing a single class, she said it was about managing her time and making sure she gives time to God.

A student of SMK Ulu Kinta, she hopes to study accountancy after Form Five.

Natalie Boo Qin Hui, 14, who is an altar server, also received extra applause as she is one of the first few girls to start as an altar server at SMC. She has committed herself to serve at Mass even during school holidays.

It was also a double joy for the parents of Theodatus and Christabel Leong, who achieved full attendance.

Fr Liew congratulated all the children on their conscientiousness in attending Sunday School.

He also thanked the 18 catechists who had spent time with their charges, answering their questions and listening to their answers, whilst teaching them.
