Tensions in Jerusalem over plan for Pope's Mass at site of the Last Supper

VATICAN: In Jerusalem, plans for Pope Francis to celebrate Mass at the site of the Last Supper continue to cause controversy, with some Orthodox Jews protesting the papal appearance.

The building that houses the Cenacle—the upper room revered by Christians—is also prized by Jews as the tomb of David. Protesters have said that the Pope should not be allowed to break the usual policy that bars Christian prayer services in the building.

Tensions about the Pope’s visit to the building on Mount Zion have been increased by rumors that the government of Israel may give the Vatican control over the Cenacle. Although government officials have repeatedly denied that such an agreement is under consideration, speculation continues that a deal could be reached as part of a broader accord ending years of negotiation toward a diplomatic pact between Israel and the Holy See.--CWN
