The kingdom of God is here

The Kingdom of God is among you.’ That is the message of Jesus and the Gospels in Matthew, Mark and Luke deal with that essential phrase, ‘the Kingdom of God.’”

“What is this Kingdom of God that Jesus came for?” Archbishop Joseph Salvador Marino said, “In Mark’s Gospel, Jesus said, ‘Reform your lives and believe in the Good News in the Gospel. The Kingdom of God is among you.’ That is the message of Jesus and the Gospels in Matthew, Mark and Luke deal with that essential phrase, ‘the Kingdom of God.’”

The Apostolic Nuncio was celebrating the multi-lingual Mass at St Anthony’s Church June 16 and concelebrating with him were parish priest, Fr James Gabriel and Fr Mari Arokiam from the Church of the Assumption, Petaling Jaya.

Archbishop Marino went on to say, that to understand this message, we have to go back to the time of Jesus when he was preaching the gospels. The people at that time had reason to believe that the world had wandered away from God and were influenced by Satan. People sinned because of the devil and even sickness was attributed to the devil.

The Nuncio said that Jesus went into the desert to fast and pray. When he returned, after the 40 days in the desert, he fought with the devil. When he began to preach, Jesus asked the people to reform their lives and to believe that the Kingdom of God had come.

“When we pray the Our Father, what do we say? The phrase...‘Thy Kingdom come’....may the power of God come into the world today, this moment. Jesus taught about the Kingdom of God in parables to make it easier for the people to understand. He came to plant the seed of the Kingdom of God on earth, like the mustard seed that will grow into the biggest tree to bear fruit. You may say if Jesus destroyed evil, why is evil still around us? The question should not be why is evil still around us, but why are we not making the power of God to grow among us?

“That is the role of the Church today. 2,000 years earlier, Jesus sowed the seed and, we, the Church, have been given the responsibility of making the seed grow, to make the power of God known in the world today and to make the Kingdom of God visible.

“Just think of your Patron saint. How St Anthony of Padua, a young priest who nourished the seed by his powerful preaching which pierced the hearts of the people. He did this by making God visible to people in the world, by the way he spoke, and preached and touched the hearts of those who listened to him. The purpose of the Church today is to touch the hearts of people and to bring them back to God. The Kingdom of God is living within us at this very moment.

“We cannot live this life that God has given us or called us to as Church, unless we are one with Jesus.

Jesus is alive and is among us right now. When we come to Holy Communion, He will live in our hearts and we are able to live like Him. Let us then embrace the message of Jesus that the Kingdom of God is here and we, the Church, are the first fruits of His Kingdom to the world.”
