It was a proud and momentous occasion for 32 students of Ayer Salak’s Montfort Youth Centre (MYC) who graduated with flying colours after successfully completing a two-year course in motor mechanics and computer maintenance.
For the 2001-established MYC managed by the Brothers of St. Gabriel, this graduation marks the twelfth of the series of courses undertaken by trainees in line with the Malaysian Council of Vocational Training Programmes and the Ministry of Human Resources.
Also standing proud and tall at the occasion were parents and guardians of the graduates, knowing that their sons had acquired technical work skills and were now confident and competent young adults ready to contribute to nation building.
Said MYC Director Bro. Peter Kolandasamy, “Apart from acquiring marketable trade skills, the graduates are also taught to become wholesome individuals through character formation, guidance and counselling sessions.
Having acquired these trade and technical skills, self-respect and personal discipline, we are confident that these young graduates will prove to be assets to their employers and be the pride of their families”.
Located in Ayer Salak, some 15km north-west of Historic Malacca City, MYC is the third in the series of trade schools operated by the Gabrielite Brothers, solely aimed at helping orphans, underprivileged and marginalised youths. Most well known of the centres is the 56-year-old Montfort Boys Town in Shah Alam and the Montfort Youth Training Centre (MYTC) in Sabah, opened in June, 1999.
It has been the vision and mission of the Brothers of St. Gabriel to help the young and underprivileged to progress in life through education and training in the technical and trade skills. The Brothers have tirelessly worked to nurture youths to be the best they can be and have instilled in them the values of the religious community while selflessly giving for the benefit of others.
In this context the words of Pope Benedict XVI rings clear: “We all have an obligation to ensure that the youth of today are not deprived of opportunities to be credible witnesses of our faith working together in an Apostolate of Love”.
