Thousands thronged the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe (OLOG) from Dec 5 to celebrate the nine day novena and feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe which culminated with a procession on Dec 13. On the actual feastday, Dec 12, Archbishop Julian Leow presided at the 8.00pm Mass, with OLOG parish priest Fr Leonard Lexson concelebrating, with the theme Sent To Proclaim The Glory Of God, .
In his homily, Archbishop Leow said that God loved us so much that He sent His beloved Son as a Man without sin to dwell among us. We belong to Him, each one of us made in His image and likeness. The prelate said that the Incarnation was made possible by Mary’s willingness to become the Mother of Christ. She listened to God through the angel.
“Jesus willingly died on the Cross for us. Mary points us to Jesus...‘Do whatever He tells you...’ This is her message for all of us,” the Archbishop said. God needed Mary to be part of His salvation plan. We, too, are called to be His witnesses and His followers to holiness. He urged the parishioners to imitate Mary so that God’s love continues to be manifested in the world.
Touching on the story of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the prelate said that within seven years, 8 million Mexicans converted to the Catholic faith due to miracles attributed to the apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe in 1531. Archbishop Leow went on to say that hearts are healed and broken relationships become whole again. “Nothing is impossible with God. Go proclaim the story of God. We need to be holy, to witness the great things God is doing in our lives. Miracles do happen, manifested in the beauty and greatness of nature around us. Trust in God like Mary did,” he said.
The Prelate and Fr Leonard went down the aisle to bless the many roses that the faithful had brought, which were later placed at the shrine in honour of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
After Mass, Fr Leonard extended his feastday greetings to all from far and near. He thanked the prelate for celebrating the feastday Mass. Touching on Mary’s fiat (Yes) Fr Leonard said God’s perfect love came down to be one with us because of Mary’s willingness and cooperation with God. Mary’s participation in this greatness and beauty gave glory to God. He also asked the assembly to participate, like Mary in the greatness of God and to give glory to God.
