Walk for Jesus in Sandakan

SANDAKAN (Herald Malaysia): St Mary’s Catholic Cathedral, together with 14 other Christian denominations of the Sandakan-Inter-Church participated in the Walk for Jesus themed Love and Mercy on August 23.

This bi-annual event is organised by the Prison Ministry of the Sabah Council of Churches, held simultaneously in 18 other locations across Sabah. The walk, apart from inculcating solidarity among member churches, is also a platform to pray in unity for peace, harmony, tolerance, the well-being and prosperity to prevail in our beloved nation, Malaysia.

In Sandakan, the event is under the jurisdiction of the Sandakan Inter Church Committee and open to all denominations of churches in the district. A crowd of some 1,500 participants from the member churches in Sandakan took part in the event.

Participants assembled at the Sandakan Municipal Padang, walking along the roads within the town up to Sandakan Yacht Club and returning by the coastal road towards the Community Centre. The walk proceeded to St Mary’s Catholic Cathedral as the end point.

The Cathedral was well represented as Fr Sunny Chung and Sr Appollonia Gumpu fsic led the Catholic contingent of nearly 100 members. Before the flagging off, a praise and worship session was held at the padang with the presentation of T-shirts to Datuk Ir James Wong, Sandakan Municipal Council President, YB Stephen Wong and YB Charles Pang. The President flagged off the walk at 4.00pm. The near six-km walk took about an hour and ended in the compound of St Mary’s Catholic Cathedral.

A praise and worship session was then held in the Parish Hall and the crowd dispersed before 6.00pm.
