The Young Adults of the Church of the Immaculate Conception (CIC) had the inaugural Young, Alive and Catholic gathering on Saturday, April 9. It was attended by 30 young adults aged between 18 and 39.

It began with an opening prayer led by Clara Lee of the Young Adults organising team, followed by an icebreaker session. Participants were separated into five groups, with about six people in each group led by a Young Adult team leader. This allowed them to get to know one another but the twist was that they would have to introduce the person next to them to the entire room after the session. Next, we played a high-spirited edition of the Wink Game and it elicited loud cheers and laughter from all the participants. Once that was over, we had the chairs placed in rows for them to settle in for a few announcements.

We showed them two videos of testimonies by young adults who had attended the Alpha Youth (Catholic Context) programme and encouraged them to sign up for it, as we would be running it for the young adults later this year. We also informed them that we would be having monthly meetings, both online and in person, to plan more activities together. We were excited to announce our newly set up Instagram account, as well as our existing Facebook group, and asked them to follow us on both platforms for updates on our future plans.

Participants then returned to their small groups for the ‘Get Acquainted’ session where the Young Adult team leaders asked a series of questions to better gauge the needs of the young adults so we can tailor programmes and activities that would interest everyone involved. During the praise and worship session, we sang a selection of songs and it was heart-warming to see everyone actively participating in praising the Lord.

At 5.55pm, we ended with a closing prayer and photo session. Before the participants left, we handed out button badges with our newly designed Young Adults logo. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank our advisors, Uncle Donald Culas and Aunty Fidelis Joseph, for their encouragement and for being our biggest cheerleaders.

We’d also like to thank our parish priest, Fr Edward Rayappan, for his support and for strongly urging us to get together and to find a way to stay active in the church. “Every parish should have a space for young people to have a healthy forum where they can come together to exchange ideas and goals. A place where young adults are able to develop their God given talents for active participation of parish life and betterment of society,” said Fr Eddie.
