Twelve Catholic youth from St Mark, Batu 12 and St Peter. Sg Manila paid a visit to the Cheshire Home in Sandakan on Saturday, 4 October, 2014 to do some charity work. This activity, to reach out to those less fortunate and open the hearts of the youth to the needy, was organized by Unite Camp which was launched last month at St Mary’s Cathedral, Sandakan. The theme for their programme was Blessed are those who are merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

The youth were greeted warmly by Ms Cecilia Kimin, one of the staff at the centre, and its residents. She introduced the youth to everyone and gave a brief explanation on the background of the Home. She said that the Cheshire Home was the first home established in Malaysia to cater to the needs of those with disabilities. In Sabah, the first Cheshire Home was opened in Kota Kinabalu on 29th January 1983 while the Home in Sandakan was established on 8th April, 2000. There are nineteen residents with disabilities who are permanent residents and a small number who are there only during the day.

The youth helped to clean the areas surrounding the Home by cutting the grass, sweeping the compound, pruning the shrubs, cleaning the bathrooms and kitchen. The residents of the Home were very pleased to meet with the youth and were happy to see them help to keep their surroundings clean. By giving and receiving, the youth received many blessings from God.

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” (Matt 5:16)
