KUALA LUMPUR: On May 26, 35 Forms 1 and 2 students from the English and Tamil-speaking catechism of St Joseph Church went on a field trip to ‘Rimba Ilmu’, The Forest of Knowledge, to encounter Jesus in nature. This was in response to Pope Francis’ call to understand the problems in our environment and find ways to care for our common home. The 80-hectare botanical garden is home to a variety of plants and insects. The palm and fern trees, small and giant bamboos, lady bugs, colourful dragonflies, chirping birds and unknown insects of various shapes and patterns all welcomed the students and their catechists.

The trip began with a briefing by two friendly tour guides, Benjamin and Vanessa. There was an ice breaking session, followed by an hour and a half exploration of the place to observe terrestrial, aerial and aquatic plants.

The students were amazed by the red-trunk tree, the thorny bamboo species, the scent of pandan leaves, the water-proof yam leaf and the fresh running water, filtered by water plants. It was indeed a thrilling experience to enjoy the beauty of God’s creatures.

The field trip concluded with a reflection: What have we learnt? What does nature remind us of? What are our roles or responsibilities towards nature? How do we care for our common home to celebrate God’s power and might? — By Jane Buniel
