Jesuit brother passes away

Brother Anthony Dass, SJ of the Malaysia-Singapore Region passed away on May 5, 2020, in Jasper Lodge (Nursing Home).

PETALING JAYA: Brother Anthony Dass, SJ of the Malaysia-Singapore Region passed away on May 5, 2020, in Jasper Lodge (Nursing Home).

He was 57 years old, born on March 13, 1963 in Taiping, Perak.

From January 1987 to December 1988, he was a student of the Good Shepherd Catholic Seminary in Melaka.

He entered the Jesuit Novitiate in Singapore on Mar 18, 1989 and took his First Vows as a Brother three years later, on Mar 19, 1991.

He then studied in the Philippines for three years.

Upon his return, he was based at the Church of the Assumption for two years, helping in the Tamil Apostolate.

From 1996 to 2001 he completed his degree in Religious Education and Teacher’s Training at Universitas Sanata Dharma,  Indonesia.

After his graduation in July 2001, he was assigned to work at the English Language Institute and Jesuit Novitiate in Taungyi, Myanmar. After several years, he was sent to India to study Tamil language and subsequently did his tertianship in Sri Lanka.

Upon his return, he worked in the Catechetical Commission of the Diocese of Melaka-Johor where he conducted catechetical training programme for the laity. He was also involved in the Migrant Ministry.

He then continued his studies at Ateneo de Davao where he obtained a Master’s degree in Religious Studies and Theology. While there, he was involved in the campus ministry in Ateneo de Davao.

He suffered a stroke on Aug 19, 2016, in Malaysia which affected his right brain. More than a year later, on Dec 9, 2017 he had a second stroke in Singapore which affected his left brain. He was admitted at National University Hospital (NUH), Singapore. A couple months later, he was transferred to University of Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

On Apr 19, 2018, he was transferred from UMMC to Jasper Lodge (Nursing Home), Petaling Jaya and passed away there on May 5, 2020.

The funeral service was on Thursday, May 7. Due to MCO restrictions, the wake, funeral service and burial will be conducted privately among immediate family members and the Jesuit community.

His Grace Most Reverend Julian Leow, the Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur and the clergy of the Archdiocese extends condolences to the family of the late Bro Anthony Dass, SJ and the Jesuit community in this time of loss and are united with them in prayer and support.
