The devotion to the Sacred Heart is steeped in Holy Scripture and is an authentic Christian tradition.

Fr Simon Yong SJ said this during the feastday celebration of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, June 28.

“If you follow the Directory of popular Piety, it denotes the entire mystery of Christ, the totality of his being and his person, considered in its most intimate essential: Son of God, uncreated wisdom, infinite charity, principal of salvation and sanctification of mankind,” he added.

A three-day triduum preceded the feastday themed, The Living Heart of Jesus: The incarnate love of God.

Msgr Aloysius Tan from Penang was the main celebrant. Concelebrating were Frs Simon Yong, SJ, Dr Michael Teng, John Kelvin Pereira and Sebastian Koh, SJ.

Fr Yong told the congregation that the Sacred Heart is Christ, the Word Incarnate, Saviour, intrinsically containing in the Spirit an infinite divine-human love for the Father and for his brothers.

He told the congregation that the appropriate response to God is to depend on His grace, adding that, “we can approach His mercy with no fear.”

He said, “Sanctity is always beyond human strength but those who pursue this goal wholeheartedly can always be certain of God’s grace,” adding that that is the depth of God’s mercy.

During the homily, the priest touched on two saints, St Gertrude and St Claude de la Colombiere of the Sacred Heart, for they make the devotion relevant for us.

Fr Yong said we are immersed in an era of unbelief with regard to who God is and who we are as created by Him.

He urged the people to pray that the Sacred Heart will make us His trusted friends and humble servants in an unbelieving world.
