It was a Way of the Cross with a difference on Good Friday for the parishioners of the Church of St Henry, Batu Pahat, this year.

As part of the activities for Lent, the catechism students from the Mandarin and English Apostolates, dramatised the stations, beginning from the church porch and ending at the St Henry hall. Excitement and enthusiasm took them through the practice and during their acting out of the last walk of Jesus to His crucifixion and burial.

Once the students were given their roles, they began seriously practising for a month. With the help of teachers and parents, the costumes and props were prepared. The students prayed and viewed the film of the passion scene of Jesus to get a better understanding and to appreciate their roles better.

The stations began on Good Friday at 3pm with the parishioners actively participating by pausing at each station, praying and remembering how our Lord had suffered and died to save us. There was sacred silence throughout the “journey”. The most poignant moments were when Jesus was nailed to the cross. The sounds made by the hammering moved some of the parishioners to tears. When all was over, the parishioners walked back to the church in a solemn mood for the rest of the Good Friday service.

The efforts of the students benefitted the parishioners and helped to create the mood and atmosphere to celebrate the service. All those who sacrificed their time and energy for the play, the students, teachers and parents admitted that, this year, their Good Friday was different.

It was truly a moment of “Encounter”; To Stop, Consider and Listen to the heart beat of Jesus as He gave up His life.
